  • “Right now, we’re seeing more families and elders struggling to meet their basic food needs,” says Arvin Batingan, creative director, marketing & events at That Brown Girl Cooks!. Its Community Kitchen has been serving meals since 2020, but the need continues to grow even as funding cuts have forced the team to scale back. “Many of our neighbors are finding that a single unexpected bill or a slow week at work can lead to real hardship.”

  • I became connected with Quillisascut after a conversation at That Brown Girl Cooks about what foods people were able to access growing up. Most of us came from families that weren’t well off, and we were used to frozen foods and the cheapest things at the grocery store. We knew nothing about where our food comes from—it was mostly about what we were able to feed our families. From there, it was (Brown’s) vision to create this workshop for accessibility, for chefs of color to learn about sustainability, farming, the importance of farm-to-table cooking, and having that appreciation of the land and resources around the Washington area.

  • Highlights of the evening included a mural timeline of Communion's journey, created by Marketing Director Arvin Batingan, an incredible multi-course meal by Chef Cody and Andrea from De La Soil, special acknowledgements to long-time staff who helped the restaurant start on the right foot, including Marie Kidhe and Taelore Rhoden, and Chef Brown and her son and co-owner Damon Bomar singing their favorite song, "Nature Boy.”
